Tooling & Carving Leather

Ages 14+

Cost:  FREE

Have you been wondering how exactly those Leathersmiths carve those beautiful patterns into leather?  Well, wonder no longer, this class is for you!  We anticipate this class to be slightly longer than our previous basic courses as we’ll be teaching you the foundational skills and tools necessary to carve in the Western Sheridan Style.  Whether you like the Sheridan Carving style or not, this class provides the fundamentals you’ll need to continue on in the Western tradition, or branch off into your own style.  We’ll be going over the Basic Seven tools which are the Swivel Knife, Beveler, Backgrounder, Pear Shader, Camouflager, Seeder and Veiner.  We’ll also go over Casing leather, the process of preparing your leather to carve, as well as stropping your Swivel Knife to keep the blade in top working order.  Once completed, you’ll have a small sample flower carved into leather that you can keep forever to show how far you’ve come!

Bringing your own Mallet and Carving Tools, (the Basic Seven listed above) is welcome and preferred although we will have tools available for use/sharing.  No other materials or tools are necessary.  We’ll provide the rest and we look forward to working with you!
