Join Kat Mckinnon today as she teaches advanced figure/ scenery carving to all skill level leather crafters! Students will lean about depth of knife cuts and tooling as it applies to painting. When to cut deep and when not too. Students will need to return the next Saturday to learn advanced painting and staining techniques.

Class price includes a single shoulder, 2 figure carving tools, two craftaids, one set of paint brushes and a fine mist sprayer. Other tools such as bevelers and swivel knives are needed but not included in price cost.

Atlanta, GA #120 Leathercraft Classes

Armor Making Class, March 25th, 10 am – 3 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make bracers. All the techniques will be taught except molding around the shoulder. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

Dog Collar & Leash, April 1st, 10 am – 3 pm. Learn how to make a dog collar and leash starting with a cowhide strip. You will learn how to lay out your strap and attach hardware. Materials will be provided. Please measure your dog’s neck! Class fee is $25.00.

 

Basic Carving, April 8th, 10 am - 2 pm. In this class, you will be making a small coin purse with a pretty floral pattern on the front. We will take you through the process of carving project from a picture to a finished project and then, if there is time, you’ll do a small basket weaving. Class fee is $20.00. Maximum of 5 students.

 

Bracers, April 15th, 10 am-3 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make bracers. All the techniques will be taught except molding around the shoulder. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00.

 

Phone Case, May 6th, 9 am – 3 pm. Learn how to create a small purse that uses no metal fasteners. These cute purses are either horizontal or vertical, have a small divider pocket, and will hold most smartphones plus room for a few extras. You will choose your unique closure option and whether to make this purse with or without fringe! Class fee is $25.00. Minimum of 4 students.

 

Terraflex,  May 13th, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm. This class will introduce you to the basic of working with Terraflex. The heat-sensitive materials can be molded to make lots of light-weight items. You will learn to make an ornament with hooks to hang it when done – one each on the outside and one on the inside to hang a concho. Bring your own concho or pick up one when you get here! Class fee is $20.

 

Intermediate Armor – Chest Piece, May 20th, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm. Taught by a master armor maker, come learn how to make a Chest Piece. All the techniques will be taught. This is an intermediate class and you must have leather working experience. All materials will be supplied. Class fee is $35.00 plus one 7/9 oz. double shoulder (#9052-43), which will be on sale for $45.00/ea. for participants in this class.

 

Sheridan Style Tooling, June 10th, 10 am - 3 pm. Learn the basics of Sheridan-style tooling as compared to other types of tooling. We’ll talk about the history and design of this style, practice what we’ve learned and then tool a small project (#4188-00). You must be familiar with tooling as the basics will not be covered. You will need to bring a swivel knife, steep beveler, thumbprint, leaf liner, and undercut beveler/lifter (optional: mallet, flower center, seeder, mulefoot, veiner, Sheridan Style Carving by Bob Likewise (book)).  Class fee is $40.00.

 

 

 

Journal Making, June 17th, 10 am – 1 pm. Learn how to make how to make a journal – with or without a strap – and signatures. (A signature is a group of pages folded in half.) You will learn what is involved in cutting the leather to the correct specifications, how to make signature holes, and how to hand sew the journal. Stamping techniques and option on customization will be discussed. Class fee is $35.00. Minimum of 6 students.

 

Pattern Making, June 24th, 10 am – 2 pm. In this class, you will learn how to make a pattern based on your design idea, picture, photo, or drawing. Our guest instructor walks you through how to deal with seams, edges, curves, and things you should consider when making your pattern. Please bring your idea and all the other supplies will be supplied. Class fee is $40.

Key Fob Tooling Techniques

COST - $10

Learn the secrets behind the art of tooling beautiful and custom designs in leather. With our infamous instructor Ray at the wheel for this class, you’ll be shown techniques using the Basic seven tool set, which includes a Veiner, Beveler, Camouflager, Pear Shader, Backgrounder, Seeder and Swivel Knife. In no time at all you’ll be tooling and customizing your own projects with skill and ease.  Tools will be provided in the class, but we encourage you to bring your own basic seven (or swivel knife!), you should also come with a good attitude and an eagerness to learn.  We have a lot of fun! Ages 14+, beginners are welcome. Anticipate an all day class with this one, with a lunch break in-between, the end time is flexible depending on the speed of the attendees.

Guide Thru the Mystery of Leather

Diving into the world of leatherworking can be intimidating if you don’t know the first thing about leather; so, let Luke teach you all about what to look for in the process of selecting and buying leather. You will also learn about different cuts, as well as a little bit of history on the different tanning techniques used to accomplish different finishes and what that means when applied to picking the appropriate leather for your specific projects. This is a free lecture but please call ahead to reserve a spot, class time will vary depending on the amount of questions asked.

Belt Making Class

COST - $20

One of the best, most useful beginning projects to make for the novice leatherworker who knows their basics is a belt. Instructor Ray will guide you step by step through how to know where to punch your belt holes for a good fit, how to attach your buckle, skiving, and the hardware you’ll want to use. There will be minimal dying and customizing in this class, as we plan to only cover the basics. By the end, not only will you walk out with a new belt but you will have a good grasp on what needs to be done to make a good belt, and will be able to take this knowledge and apply it elsewhere in projects that may require belts or even straps. Tools and leather will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own supplies – such as a strap you’ve tooled, dyed, and now wish to transform into a belt, hole punches, or a favorite buckle that’s no bigger than 1 ½ “. Class time is flexible depending on the speed of the attendees and could end before the stated time.

Join us Saturday the 25th for a great beginner’s leatherworking class! You will learn basic tooling and stamping, saddle stitching, and antique finishing as you complete a simple card case. Using our Basic Seven kit (Item #8170-00) you will learn intro carving and tooling techniques. You can choose between tooling a floral design or stamping your initial for personalizing your case. Next you will apply an antique stain in your choice of color to really make your image pop! Finally you’ll stitch the pieces together and apply a conditioning top coat.

All tools and materials will be provided, and if you wish you may purchase your own Basic Seven Kit at a special class price. We highly recommend this, as it is important to become accustomed to working with the same swivel knife each time you practice. If you happen to have your own swivel knife and/or Basic tool set and/or mallet, please feel free to bring them along to use.

The Basics of Hardware – Selection & Setting

If you’re new to leatherworking or maybe you’ve only ever hand stitched your leather, come take this class and we’ll teach you all about how to properly size a rivet, (yes, that’s important), as well as how to set them.  We’ll also go through how to set other various hardware such as Eyelets/Grommets, Rivets & Burrs, Line, Segma and Glove Snaps, Decorative Spots and Chicago Screws.  Each of these hardware settings have their own tool and technique for proper application.  With our many years of experience we will impart our personal tips and tricks to help you set each one properly…..Like how to get that Line 24 Snap to set straight….we understand and we can help! 

 

Bringing your own Mallet is preferred although we will have tools available for use/sharing.  No other materials or tools are necessary.  We’ll provide the rest and we look forward to working with you!

The Basics of Stitching & Lacing

Ages 12+

In this class we’ll go over the most important thread stitch for hand sewing leather…The Saddle Stitch!  It’s a remarkably simple stitch to perfect but there are a few variations of it and some tools that make stitching leather much easier.  We’ll also go over the basic Single Loop Laced Stitch which is the perfect starter stitch for decorative lacing around the edge of your project.  Have you been using single or double prong lacing needles?  Have you ever tried the Perma-Lok needle?  Do you have Stitching Chisels for thread or lace?  Come and let us show you the advantages of these tools and we’ll help you decide what will work best for you.

This class will be the second in a multi-part series on a Steampunk design.  These will be collaborative classes where everyone in attendance will be able to discuss different options for construction and all be a part of creating a unique pattern.  Richard will continue the series today with a Face Mask/Respirator.  This will be the first part of a two-part class.  The second part next month will include attaching tubing from the mask to a leather box worn either attached to a belt or worn like a cross-body bag.   Class size is limited to 6 people.  (Class 1 in February was a pair of Goggles).

In this class, we will go over some advanced stitching techniques to make a leather cup that could be used to store pens, paintbrushes, or even tools. Adding a mixture of pine pitch and bees wax to the inside and you could even make it into a drinking cup. Either way the techniques you will learn can be applied to many different projects.

 

Open Table Tuesdays: Tuesdays are our open workshop, all day. During this day we encourage customers to bring in their project and use our workspace. We don’t provide materials or loaner tools during workshop hours, but we are more than happy to recommend a tool, technique or give advice and feedback. Open Table is a wonderful opportunity to network with local leathercrafters in the area and exchange leathercraft knowledge and ideas. If there is a specific problem that you would like help with, please give us a call in advance to make sure we have someone on staff who can work you through that problem. Folding knife sheath

This sheath class is for a small folding knife.  We will be stitching and using snaps.  This works best with a knife that does not have a clip but can be done with a knife that has a clip as well. This is a basic sheath and will have no tooling. Leather and all other items needed for construction are provided for.  A knife for cutting and any stitching punches you have will be great to bring, if you do not have then some will be available for sharing.

Basic Tooling classes are our most popular class. This class is perfect for beginners or anyone new to tooling leather. The best way to learn is by using your own tools, so we ask that you have at least the following basic tools: swivel knife, beveler, camouflage tool, veiner, seeder, pear shader, and backgrounder. Description/Instructions: There are many ways to stitch or lace your leather: for function, for decoration, or both! Come join us for instruction on the most commonly used thread stitch, also known as the Saddle Stitch, as well as the basics in lacing with leather lace.  In this class, you’ll learn all about the different needles, threads, lace, stitching and lacing prongs.  Once you understand the differences, complexities, and variations available, using these techniques will dramatically improve your leather projects.  All materials and tools will be provided, or feel free to bring your own.  Ages 14+ and beginners are welcome. Class time is flexible, depending on the speed of the attendees.

Basic Leather Tooling Class ( Saturday  10am to 1:00 pm )

This class is for the hobbyist  that wants to learn basic skills to work with leather. We will go through the whole process of planning, designing, and completing a leather bag of your dreams. Class will be from 10 am to 1pm. We will be working with pre-finished leather ( i.e. Utility Veggi-Tan and splits) . These classes are designed to be standalone so you can come to the class that you’re most interested in (but you will get most by attending all).

 

Classes are $10.00 for the whole series or $10 for drop in's. Additionally, all students will get elite pricing on ALL products (up to 50% off) on class days.

Ever wonder how to carve? This class will explore the usage of the 6 basic floral tools. We will be doing a hands on project that will use Swivel knife, Bevel tool, Background  Tool, Camouflage Tool , Pear Shader Tool, Seeder and a Veiner. 

 

Class #3 :  2D, 3D and Basket weave Stamps

Date Jan 21, Time 10-1

Basket weave is a very common 2-D stamp used in a lot of leather designs. In this class we will be working with different basket weave and 3D stamps.

 

Class #4 :  Stains, Dye and Hardware

Date -Jan 28, Time 10-1

Learn how to set Snaps, use rivets, and install Conchos into your project. We will also go over how to install a bucket into straps, belts, and buckles.

Also learn how to use the latest Dyes, Stains, and Cova Leather Paints.

 

Class #5 :    Stitching Techniques

Date – Feb 4 , Time 10-1

Stitching is a critical aspect of leather working. This class will cover the standard saddle stitch technique and others (using sewing Awls ) to join leather together that will give your project a professional look. 

 

Class #6 :   Lacing Techniques

Date -Feb 11, Time 10-1

Learn how to use lacing to give your project the different look . For this class we will be focusing on single loop and triple loop lacing techniques. We will look at splicing and ending the project.

There will be 3 classes to complete basic leather crafting course.

Class 1: You will learn stamping of a leather coaster with basket weave stamp. Class will emphasize on basic leather knowledge that includes leather preparation and a proper and safe use of leather stamps to create designs. In second half of class, we will transfer a design on piece of leather for another project (if time permits).

Class 2: You will experience a bit more in carving leather techniques that starts with safe handling of swivel knife and with the help of various tools, you will be able to tool the project. You will complete the tooling part of our project in the same day.

Class 3: In this week, you have done stamping & tooling each project and now, will learn how to dye your project and will get to know more techniques to seal and finish your leather to a presentable state.
Again, if time permits and upon willingness to all students, you will be taught to various use of binding styles & few patterns of lacing.
